Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announcing the launch of Ancient Olympia Common Grounds on Nov 10, 2021.

The Challenge: The ruins at Ancient Olympia told a story of the values of the original Olympic games. Microsoft and the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports wanted to digitally preserve the ruins and provide access to the history of this unique site on a global scale.

The Solution: Through a deep collaboration between archeologists, technologists and designers, 27 monuments were selected to be featured in the project. Months of design and optimization followed, along with development of editorial content to accompany the digital recreations. The core content was further optimized for each unique platform (MR, 3D, AR and exhibit). A global campaign rounded out the breakthrough use of AI and expert scholars to preserve Ancient Olympia’s cultural heritage.

Website.

Explore Ancient Olympia’s historical monuments in full 3D via the web-based desktop and tablet experience. Visitors to the site can also share thoughts via voice or text to reflect on our common ground and the ways people are interconnected by our shared history and events.

App.

The mobile app enables a rich augmented reality (AR) experience which brings the monuments to life at real-world scale. Visitors onsite at Olympia will be able to use the app to navigate through the monuments to see them as they once stood over 2,000 years ago.

HoloLens 2.

The immersive Microsoft HoloLens 2 exhibition invites people to walk through the digitally preserved site of Ancient Olympia. This multi-sensory tour is housed at the Athens Olympics Museum where audiences from all over the world can participate in this revolutionary experience.
